Lowering Uly by Replacing Shock Spring...

Is this possible because I'm imagining that I am about as liable to find a complete used XB12Ss/XB12XT/XB12STT shock as I am to fix the whole "world peace" conundrum?!? I know the issues w/the front forks -either get XB12S/XB12R forks or figure out a way to lower existing fork tubes in the tree. But I was wondering if somehow (how... I cannot imagine now that I have looked into it) I could simply find a Showa spring that would be correct rate and leave the shock body itself alone (except for adjusting settings maybe).
