trouble fitting xb9s belt..

G'day... i have an '02 xb9s lightning and am having great trouble getting a new belt fitted onto it. for some reason the only belt that could possibly fit onto the bike, given the length between the swingarm and cog as well as the groove/teeth size (all, as far as i'm aware, factory standard), just ends up being too tight for the pulley to be fitted. got me stumped. could it be that it's been in an accident and fitted with a different model (xb12s perhaps?) swingarm/pulley/cog???.. is an xb12s's swingarm, etc. different in size to the 9s?? any help/ thoughts would be appreciated. thanks.
